Bellaterra Spain

Bellaterra is a neighborhood of Cerdanyola del Vallès, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). It is best known as the location of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Development of the neighborhood began in 1929, led by the pharmacist Bartomeu, who parceled land belonging to his father-in-law and built the Bellaterra station on the Ferrocarrils de Catalunya railway (the predecessor of FGC). Within the main residential area is El Pedregar de Bellaterra Park, a 12,000 m² garden-museum that includes a restaurant, large landscaped areas, fountains and waterfalls, and sculptures by artists such as Subirachs, Crespo Rivera, Vicente Larrea, Vasallo, Charles Collet, and Perceval, as well as Arcadian figures in Carrara marble and an open-air amphitheater with seating for about 150 people. The parish church of the Holy Cross is also located in the center of the neighborhood. Between Bellaterra and the core area of Serraperera lies the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, built in 1968 and inaugurated in 1971. At present, Bellaterra is in the process of changing its administrative status to become a decentralized municipal entity (EMD).
