Callao Peru

Callao is a coastal city and region on the Pacific Ocean in the Lima metropolitan area. It is Peru’s main seaport and the location of its principal air gateway, Jorge Chávez International Airport. The municipality of Callao occupies the entire Callao Region, which is also identical in area to the Province of Callao. Founded in 1537 by the Spanish, the city has a long naval history as one of the principal ports in Latin America and the Pacific, and it was one of the key Spanish cities during the colonial era. Central Callao is located about 15 km (9.3 mi) west of the Historic Centre of Lima. Callao includes several islands: San Lorenzo (currently a military base), El Frontón (a former high‑security prison), the Cavinzas Islands, and the Palomino Islands, which host numerous sea lions and seabirds in a largely untouched ecosystem. There are proposals to build a large maritime, land, and air port on San Lorenzo Island, known as the San Lorenzo Megaport Project.
