Puerto Viejo is the primary district of the Sarapiquí canton, located in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. It spans an area of 426.73 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 20,174 residents (as of 2011), with an average population density of 47.28 residents per square kilometer. The district's capital is the city of Puerto Viejo, which is situated 82 kilometers north of the city of Heredia. It is 37 meters above sea level. The region features flat topography, a humid climate, and is intersected by powerful, meandering rivers, with the Dirty River being the most significant. Puerto Viejo is situated on the banks of the Sarapiquí River (near its junction with the Puerto Viejo River), where a small river port is located for the coastal shipping of shallow draft vessels.
