Thanjavur is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a significant center for South Indian religion, art, and architecture. Many of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are situated in and around Thanjavur. The most prominent of these, the Brihadeeswara Temple, is located in the heart of the city. Thanjavur is also known for Tanjore painting, a distinctive art style native to the region. Thanjavur serves as the administrative headquarters of the Thanjavur District. The city is a vital agricultural hub situated in the Cauvery Delta and is often referred to as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. The city gained prominence during the Chola dynasty when it was the capital of the empire. Following the decline of the Cholas, Thanjavur was governed by various dynasties, including the Pandyas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Madurai Nayaks, the Thanjavur Nayaks, the Thanjavur Marathas, and the British Empire. It has been part of independent India since 1947.
