Day 1: QUITO – ILUMÁN – OTAVALO: FLAVORS & WAVES OF THE ANDES

Pick up in the morning from your hotel in Quito and travel north through breathtaking mountain landscapes to Ilumán, where you’ll take part in a hands-on Andean cooking class led by local experts. Prepare and taste traditional dishes including chochos salad, fritada (slow-cooked pork), potato tortillas, quinoa with vegetables, and the iconic helado de paila. Learn ancestral techniques, discover the cultural meaning behind each ingredient, and enjoy the delicious meal you’ve prepared together. A vegan option is available, making this experience perfect for all travelers. In the afternoon, continue to Atuntaqui, renowned for its textile heritage. Visit a traditional hat workshop to observe the artisanal process from raw fiber to finished piece. Then explore a tapestry studio where vibrant colors and symbolic Andean designs come to life on working looms. Your journey concludes with a visit to a Calluwa weaving workshop, where ancestral weaving traditions are preserved as a living cultural expression.

Overnight in Otavalo.

Day 2: OTAVALO: SPIRITUAL PATHS & LIVING CULTURE OF OTAVALO

Discover the spiritual and cultural heart of the Ecuadorian Andes on this immersive full-day experience. Begin in Ilumán, a community renowned for its traditional healers, where you’ll witness a demonstration of an ancestral Andean limpia (energy cleansing ritual). Learn about the deep spiritual connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Indigenous worldview that honors nature and balance. Continue to the iconic Plaza de los Ponchos, one of Latin America’s most important indigenous markets. Explore vibrant stalls filled with handwoven textiles, ponchos, jewelry, and authentic crafts while experiencing the living Kichwa culture. Next, visit a traditional Andean instrument workshop and discover how charangos, quenas, and zampoñas are handcrafted. Enjoy a short live performance and feel the emotion and history behind Andean music. End your journey at the Quitsato Project, a unique monument marking the equatorial line with scientific precision and cultural symbolism. After the experience, transfer back to your hotel in Quito.

This tour takes place at a high Andean area, the use of warm clothing is recommended.
